Power Yoga

Power yoga is a modern western interpretation of Ashtanga yoga originally developed in the United States by the efforts of Baron Baptiste, Bryan Kest, and Beryl Birch among others. It is a very rigorous fitness oriented practice that emphasizes strength and flexibility as opposed to the more meditative and passive characteristics commonly associated with traditional forms of yoga, yet shares the general goal of unifying the body, mind and spirit.

Power yoga is actually a general term and does not follow a uniform series of postures or sequences found in other dynamic practices such a Bikram and Ashtanga. The classes generally utilize a form of vinyasa flow- traditional asanas linked by sun salutations that cause a rhythmatic flowing transition from one pose to another. But one'sexperience will vary between one class, studio, or instructor to another. Again, the the development of strength and flexibility are the common denominators making power yoga not only ideal for athletes, but also for those looking for a fresh, alternative path to fitness with less emphasis of meditative and stretching characteristics found in the classical yogas.

We offer both beginner and experienced classes where participants are encouraged to focus on their own personal practice, challenging themselves while respecting physical limitations. Students will utilize Pranayama, synchronizing breathe with movement. Eventually one's initial apprehension and fear will release and the ability to master the more complex poses and sequences increase allowing the student to experience the meditative qualities commonly shared with the many variations of yoga found throughout the world.
